Start with the question you need the diagram to answer.

Processes and decisions

Use a flowchart for steps, branches, approvals, and operational workflows. Use a state diagram when the important information is how one object changes state.

Interactions and software

Use a sequence diagram to show messages in time order. Use a class diagram for software structures, and an architecture flowchart for services and dependencies.

Data, planning, and people

Use an ER diagram for entities and relationships, a Gantt chart for schedules, a mind map for ideas, and a journey diagram for customer stages and sentiment.
